Associated Builders and Contractors said Wednesday that its Coalition for a Democratic Workplace has filed a lawsuit to block changes that the National Labor Relations Board made to shorten the time it would take workers to certify a union to bargain for them.
In a fiery press release, ABC said the new rules are "drastic departures from precedent that speed up the election process and leave the door open for the full 'ambush' election rule to be implemented."
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce joined in the suit asking a judge for an injunction to stop the new rules.
"The new rule effectively shortens election time frames, limiting employees’ opportunity to hear from employers and make an informed choice and diminishing employers’ due process, the coalition's website argues.
ABC said labor elections have averaged about 38 days. The new rules will cut that to between 14 and 24 days, the group argued.
The NLRB said the action is intended to streamline the election and appeals process to avoid delays.
