Dive Brief:

• About 20 human skulls were uncovered by workers and machinery excavating for a new rail tunnel beneath London.
• The skulls were below an area where planners knew there was a 16th-century burying ground and they dated from the time when Rome ruled the British Isles.
• The find was near what will be the Liverpool Street station of the Crossrail transit project.

The discovery halted the work temporarily but does not present a road – or railroad – block. In this YouTube video,

scientists explain that they think the skulls probably washed down a tributary of the River Thames from an area where they knew the Romans had buried bodies. The find is also not too surprising in an ancient city where the Crossrail project has unearthed about 10,000 acrheological items in four years.
