Dive Brief:
- Five concrete beams collapsed Saturday at a runway construction site at Florida's Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
- The structural beams fell 35 feet to the ground and one worker suffered minor injuries to his hand, though he was treated at the scene.
- The collapse—the first mishap since the $791-million project began—is being investigated by several agencies, as well as the contractor responsible for that particular section of the runway.
Dive Insight:
The 125-foot, 84,000-pound beams collapsed in a domino effect that thankfully only resulted in minor injuries for one worker. They are meant to form the deck of the new runway, as well as the roof of a tunnel that will run beneath it. The Florida East Coast railway tracks were closed to allow workers to remove the beams and debris, and the runway is currently expected to be completed by June 2014, opening later that September.
