Dive Brief:
- Tekla, the building information management (BIM) software subsidiary of Trimble, lists one American project among the winners of its Global BIM Awards for 2013.
- The BB&T Ballpark in Charlotte, N.C., which will be home to the minor league baseball team Charlotte Knights, was judged the best in a category for precast concrete jobs using BIM.
- The overall winner for what Tekla calls Total BIM was the Puuvilla Shopping Center in Pori in Tekla's home country, Finland, a 13-company effort that included laser scanning of existing structures to create an inventory before construction of new structures began.
Dive Insight:
The other category winners included a second Finnish project and ones from the United Kingdom, France and Azerbaidjan. Europe has been seen as a more enthusiastic adapter of BIM for projects than the U.S., which may account for the company finding more BIM-built projects there. In Charlotte, Tekla said, "Wayne Brothers was responsible for concrete construction and coordination. They used models for planning pours, tracking progress and coordinating with other trades. The rebar provider Harris Steel used the concrete model in detailing, which lead to fewer errors and more efficient workflow."
