Dive Brief:
- Google generated lots of publicity when it began construction of a four-story structure of some sort on a barge moored in San Francisco Bay near the Bay Bridge.
- It's still not clear just what Google will do with the structure, but there is no mystery about the company's being told to stop construction and weigh anchor out of the jurisdiction of the Bay Conservation and Development Commission's turf – or water, rather.
- Mooring a barge in the commission district requires a permit, and a permit requires that the barge have some maritime or recreational use, so the barge is expected to take an 80-mile cruise to the Port of Stockton.
Dive Insight:
There's no word on whether Google Glass will be involved in navigating the channel from San Francisco to Stockton. It seems clear, however, that whatever project Google has going on is not something it wants to put through the process of seeking a permit to stay where it began, off Treasure Island.
