Dive Brief:
- Having just wrapped up the Sochi Olympics and the slew of news stories about what wasn't ready, barely ready, or just didn't work (think that fifth Olympic ring), the world can now watch and wait to see if Brazil handles June's World Cup soccer matches better.
- The nation that was awarded the 2014 games in 2007 needs 12 stadiums for all of the competitions, and eight are done, with a ninth almost there and three in nail-biting mode.
- The promised delivery date for all 12 stadiums was the end of last year, but only six made it.
Dive Insight:
As happened in Sochi, some of the work is done inside the construction sites, but outside work remains. Brazil insists everything will be ready in time for the stadiums to be tested out before the actual tournament begins. Several of the stadium projects were marred by workers' deaths, and one of those incidents prompted other workers to lay down their tools in protest.
