Dive Brief:
- A crane being used in constructing One 57, a residential tower in Manhattan, was hauling a 13,000-pound load up the building when a generator went on the blink.
- Police closed 57th Street for the several hours that the weight dangled 30 to 40 stories above.
- The same project had New York officials on edge for several days when winds from Superstorm Sandy broke a tower crane about a year ago, and the piece swung over the streets.
Dive Insight:
Crews were able to lower the load very slowly after the morning mishap and had it back on the ground by 3:30 p.m. The tower that the cranes are building will top out at 1,004 feet of sky-high condominiums, one of which reportedly has sold for $90 million.
