Innovation in construction often comes from those for whom it is a necessity, Scott Sedam says in describing what he's learned from the companies in the lower half of Professional Builder magazine's list of Top 100 construction firms, ranked by size.
He offers a list of strategies and says they are often developed by those who toil in secondary and tertiary markets:
- Early input = better design + lower cost
- Success built on a “culture of ownership”
- Involve suppliers and trades to boost sales
- Open-book management
- Visual scopes – a picture is worth 1,000 words
- Hire suppliers and trades by value — not by price
- Home building as stewardship
