New Anita Moreno Regional Hospital a pioneer in modern mental health care in Latin America
MIAMI – March 14, 2017 – IBT Group of Miami reports it has completed the initial phase of the reconstruction and expansion of a 257-bed hospital in Panama, which will be the first in Latin America to implement a new model for the care and treatment of mental health patients.
The modern mental health care unit is part of a $125 million construction project underway by IBT Group to rebuild and update the Anita Moreno Regional Hospital, which serves more than 200,000 residents in the Los Santos Province on the Azuaro Peninsula in southern Panama.
“Last month the Panamanian health minister approved the transfer of patients from the psychiatric ward of the old hospital to the new one. The patients already are benefiting from a center with first-class infrastructure and state-of-the-art technology,” said Daniel Toledano, managing director and chief operating officer of IBT Group of Miami.
Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela and Health Minister Dr. Miguel Mayo inaugurated the first phase of the hospital last month during a ceremony. The 125-bed mental health care unit provides hospitalization for various psychiatric conditions and an outpatient center for the followup and care of patients who have completed treatment. In addition, the hospital’s first phase includes modern teaching and medical residency spaces.
When the Anita Moreno Regional Hospital is completed in 2018, it will have a total of 257 beds in semiprivate rooms of two beds each, replacing the original hospital and psychiatric ward built in 1970. It will provide general services and specialties, including: outpatient surgery, emergency department, imaging, intensive care unit, dermatology, infectology, dentistry, cardiology, geriatric, pharmacy and laboratory. The new hospital will count among the most specialized medical units in the region.
