Dive Brief:
-
An “explosion” in the use of sensors and monitors by building owners is making them sensitive to the way their properties are using and managing natural resources, according to research by safety science company UL.
-
Within 10 years, building crews, owners, scientists and occupants will become increasingly aware that reducing energy and water consumption improves business bottom lines, the report said.
-
The result will be cleaner indoor air, healthier occupants and more sustainable building, noted the report, which was written by UL Chief Economist Erin Grossi.
Dive Insight:
Greater awareness of building performance will be buoyed by the technology-savvy millennials who will replace older operations managers as they retire, Grossi noted in the study. In the process, the building industry will develop an “acute” focus on building performance.
