Dive Brief:
-
Nearly 10% of Americans want to move to different homes—but that doesn’t mean they’re going to do it this year.
-
The U.S. Census Bureau said in its latest Household Economic Studies report last week that while 9.6% of households expressed dissatisfaction with their current digs, history has shown that “the majority of those who desire to move do not move within the next year."
-
Still, the report said, unhappy householders are more likely to move than the general population—18.3% compared with 9.6% of those who said they are happy where they are.
Dive Insight:
Despite complaints from the 9.6% about their homes, neighborhoods, local safety and public services, the Census pointed to an increase in residential satisfaction and a decreased desire to move over the years. That has coincided with a lower rate of residential moves.
The survey showed that renters are far more likely to want to move than homeowners. Among homeowners, young adults are more likely to dislike their existing homes than those who are middle-age and older.
