Dive Brief:
-
Female homeowners younger than 35 are most likely to adopt smart technology for their homes if it comes in the form of safety features like indoor and outdoor lighting, door locks, and security cameras, a survey by Better Homes and Gardens showed.
-
More than half of the millennial women surveyed said they’re in the market for products that can make their yards more secure, compared with 31% of Baby Boomers.
-
The younger survey participants also said they believe smart technology can complement their homes’ interior décor, while most older respondents disagreed.
Dive Insight:
Younger homeowners seem far more likely than Baby Boomers to consider spending money on smart technology an investment in their homes. For example, 57% of millennial women compared with 35% of Baby Boomers said smart technology is a good investment. And while 64% of the millennial women said smart technology is expensive, almost as many said it’s worth it because it helps save energy in the home.
"This connected generation views technology as a way to get greater enjoyment from their home living experience as well as piece of mind," Jill Waage, brand executive editor for Better Homes and Gardens, told an audience at last week’s International Builders’ Show.
