Dive Brief:
-
A San Diego company that has managed construction projects at five California airports has been awarded a $961.3-million design and construction contract to help modernize Los Angeles International Airport.
-
Turner/PCL will build the northern half of a new satellite concourse that will join the airport’s north and south runways. The southern half will be awarded separately and will bring the total cost of the concourse project to $1.25 billion, according to The Los Angeles Times.
-
The concourse is part of an ongoing $2.1 billion expansion at the third-busiest commercial U.S. airport.
Dive Insight:
Beyond building a new concourse, LAX is moving ahead with a $4 billion Landside Access Modernization Program, which is slated to add a consolidated rental car center and passenger drop-off parking areas. Central to the plan to relieve congestion is an automated “people mover” that will sync those stops with a new light rail.
Federal regulators told LA’s CBS2 last spring that LAX ranks third among all U.S. airports for passenger complaints, after New York’s JFK Airport and Chicago O’Hare.
