The latest list by Global Construction of the world’s Top 10 construction companies includes two that are based in the U.S.: Third-ranked Bechtel, which worked on the Hoover Dam in 1936 and on the Trans-Alaska Pipeline system in the 1970s; and No. 8 Kiewit, a Nebraska-based firm that is owned by its employees.

The French firm Vinci has the largest revenues of any privately owned construction company in the world, followed by Spanish contractor Grupo ACS.

Rounding out the list are No. 4 Hochtief, of Germany; Skanska, the Swedish firm that is building the controversial Atlantic Yards project in New Jersey; Balfour Beatty and Laing O’Rourke in London; France’s Bouygues Construction; and Royal BAM Group in Holland.

With age comes wisdom—and wealth, if these firms are any indication. Most of the construction giants on the list have been around for a while. Top-ranked Vinci is 115 years old and No. 9 Royal BAM Group was founded in 1886.
