Dive Brief:
-
Fast-food restaurants are changing their building designs in an effort to lure back diners, who are eating out less now than at any time since 1993.
-
Wendy’s, McDonald’s and the 3,400-location Arby’s, which has new owners, have been experimenting with everything from their menus to their wall colors in an attempt to boost sales.
-
Arby’s, for example, is tearing down old restaurants and replacing them with new stores that feature wood paneling, bolder colors and warmer lighting.
Dive Insight:
The effort is paying off, at least for Arby’s, where sales at its new locations have grown by 18% to 20% over the past year and a half. The 50-year-old, historically suburban chain is also now venturing into urban locations.
