Dive Brief:
-
The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded $584 million for construction, repairs, and improvements on highways, bridges, train rails, ports, and other infrastructure projects through this year's TIGER grant program.
-
Seventy-two projects in 46 states won the grants. Among the grant winners, 47% requested funding for highway projects; 27% for transit; 12.7% for maritime; and 11.5% for rail.
-
The biggest winners were awarded for a bridge that will run across the Piscataqua River between Maine and New Hampshire; and New York City’s Vision Zero program, which works to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety with safer streets—each received a $25 million grant. Those projects will add the grant money to other funds to complete the work.
Dive Insight:
DOT receives far more requests for funding than it can approve, and is careful to point out that the TIGER awards went in nearly equal amounts to conservative and liberal states.
