Dive Brief:
-
More than a quarter of construction professionals believe that superintendents have the field's toughest job. But these superintendents also told pollsters at FieldLens, a construction communications software firm, that they’re happier than their colleagues in other positions.
-
The hardest parts of the job, according to the 163 superintendents who participated in the poll, are poor construction drawings, keeping subcontractors on track, dealing with county inspectors, and keeping paperwork up to date.
-
Still, 68% of them reported they are “very happy” with their jobs. That compares with 59% of construction pros overall. The overarching reasons: Superintendents are able to see the results of their work and watch young professionals as they mature.
Dive Insight:
The survey’s positive findings were tinged with a bit of negativity: Some superintendents complained of long days that begin before sunrise and often last 12 hours, which can interfere with family life.
