Construction of the world’s largest tidal stream turbine power plant will begin this month in Scotland.

The $83 million plant will include 269 turbines with the capacity to power 175,000 homes. It will be built on the seabed at Ness of Quoys in Caithness.

The plant will open in phases. It will be delivered to the national grid in 2016 and is expected to deliver power by 2020.

The huge tidal energy plant is considered a “significant contribution to the global marine renewable industry.” The company managing the project, Atlantis Resources, is also working on tidal energy projects off the coast of Canada.
