Dive Brief:
-
Construction firms have happier employees than companies in any other industry, a new report by human resource research firm TinyHR revealed.
-
The steady recovery of the housing industry has led to greater job creation and higher salaries, which have translated into better morale among employees, the survey of 30,000 employees in 12 industries showed.
-
The report also noted that because construction workers often take apprenticeships and get training and coaching before they enter the work force and once they’re on the job, they tend to be confident in their skills, which makes their work more enjoyable.
Dive Insight:
Part of what makes employees happy with their jobs, the report said, is the absence of conditions that make them unhappy. Topping that list are unsupportive managers, a lack of tools and resources needed to succeed, and no opportunity for professional growth.
On the construction site, workers are most likely to be dissatisfied when their employers do not hold routine safety meetings—a signal that the bosses don’t care what happens to the crews—and when managers do not ask front-line employees to contribute ideas for solving problems and improving conditions.
