Dive Brief:
- A Better Homes & Gardens homeowner survey found which interior colors will help a new home quickly find a buyer, and which ones might leave a property languishing on the market, according to Realtor.com.
- The survey revealed that colors in the blue family are the most popular choice (with 62% saying they would choose it) for a home’s interior due to their calming effect, while homeowners eschew orange (with 58% saying they wouldn't choose it), black and violet. Following blue in popularity are earthy greens and neutrals.
- Regardless of color choices, for either walls or furnishings, Realtor.com recommended leaving the eye-popping colors to accent pieces.
Dive Insight:
The good news for bright color lovers is that a pop on the front door or shutters is considered a good thing, but 8% of homeowners said they would prefer to keep it off exterior walls.
While Zillow’s 2016 design trend predictions forecast natural colors and textures with unique artisan accent pieces as the trend for the year, Pantone’s 2016 color of the year was decidedly not neutral. The color company, whose influence can be felt from home furnishings to the fashion runways, selected Serenity and Rose Quartz — dustier cousins of baby blue and blush pink.
This selection was a tame departure from Pantone’s past bold choices like Marsala, Radiant Orchid, Emerald and Tangerine Tango, but it’s a virtual rainbow compared to other major color players’ choices for 2016 — all shades of white.
Staying up to date with the hottest color trends can give residential designers a leg up on competition.
