Dive Brief:
-
A northern California couple will be pruning more than their trees this winter—they’ll be scaling back the grandiose house they built in one of them.
-
Placer County planning officials said the couple overreached on their permit to build an “accessory structure” on their property when they constructed a 500-square-foot treehouse with a full kitchen and working bathroom.
-
The officials said the $60,000 structure, which was featured on The Animal Planet cable network last month, is too much for the property, where the couple also has a family home and a guest cottage. They have ordered the owners to remove the kitchen.
Dive Insight:
While these three-dwelling owners don’t call their treehouse “home,” others do. A Kentucky builder, for example, recently sold a 138-square foot treehouse to a couple that turned it into a bed-and-breakfast rental. The builder spent $23,000 to build the structure, and sold it for more than double.
