Dive Brief:
-
The Steel Framing Industry Association has launched a certification program to ensure that cold-formed steel connectors meet quality guidelines, building codes, and ASTM standards.
-
Association officials said the program will move the industry toward a more consistent level of quality among steel building components.
-
Certified products will meet or exceed performance and specification requirements, according to SFIA President Bill Courtney, who is CEO of ClarkDietrich, a manufacturer of cold-formed steel products.
Dive Insight:
Association officials have said they hope the certification will increase the use of steel in construction as building codes have changed to allow more wood in tall buildings. About a quarter of non-residential construction uses cold-formed steel, and another quarter relies on wood framing.
